He is an Iranian Independent documentary filmmaker, producer, film educator and photographer. His Films has been selected for presentation and competition in many film festivals where he won a great number of awards, Acclaimed by critics and recognized as one of the most Important Iranian documentary makers of his time. He has been honored by Retrospectives of his films as "Anthology Film Archives" in New York, Doc Point Helsinki Documentary Film Festival in Finland and Museum of the moving image (MOMI) in New York. In 2010 ,Oskouei received the Prince Claus Award from the Netherlands for his achievements.
Mehrdad Oskoui has also sat on several international film festival Juries, including the 36th Jean Rouch Film Festival, Paris 2016, The CPH:DOX, Copenhagen FilmFestival, Denmark 2017, The head of the Jury at the short film competition section of the 58th Krakow Film Festival, Polan 2018 and the 9th Budapest International Documentary Festival, Hungary 2023.
