following the screening of JANE CAMPION, THE CINEMA WOMAN, dir. Julie Bertuccelli
DKF KAMERA. Discussion
One proof that the world of cinema is still dominated by men may be the fact that in the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, only eight women have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director. Only three left Los Angeles with an award in this category, including Jane Campion in 2021 ("THE POWER OF THE DOG"). The statistics are no better when it comes to awarding the Palme d'Or at Cannes to films made by women. Here, during the festival's 86-year tradition, only three female directors have been awarded, including Jane Campion in 1993 for "THE PIANO". The New Zealand director has been consistently creating auteur cinema for years. Her films are observant and sensitive towards their heroes. Campion’s films constitute the foundation of the feminist cinema. The documentary about Jane Campion is a starting point for us to talk about the artist who has blazed the most important trails, even though the odds have been stacked against her. We invite you to the panel discussion after the screening.
