Night of museums. Screening of WHITE BALLS ON WALLS dir. Sarah Vos
The protagonist of the film is a museum in the midst of the transformation process. The film's title is taken from a slogan and a chant that accompanied a demonstration in front of the Stedelijk, Amsterdam’s modern art museum 20 years ago. So much time had to pass for the institutional world of culture to address the fundamental issue of equality and thus to redefine the canon of art. Who is an art icon? And just as importantly, who gets to decide? As of 2019, 90% of the works on display at Stedelijk were made by white men. Change is long overdue, but it is easier said than done. When you appraise art, should you also take the skin color or gender of the artist into account? And how to engage with visitors who find all this “too politically correct”? The film offers a new perspective on the history of art.
